2012 ING New York City Marathon Finish. The race that was that never was.

The original plan was to go out and photograph for the Robin Hood Foundation at their 20-mile marker block party, but…  As many of you know there was a cancellation of the 2012 ING New York City Marathon.  As runners were caught in the middle of NYC politics and a disaster with the effects the city city has never seen before those 25,000+ runner in the city descended upon the place in New York where runners feel most comfortable, Central Park.  Twitter feeds told stories of runners boarding the Staten Island Ferry to bring goods and support victims of the area and rumors flew about runners trying to run across the Verrazano Bridge in an effort to cover the marathon course.  What was evident is that runners for this year’s marathon needed some healing of their own.  Central Park on Sunday offered the perfect remedy.  Thousands upon thousands of runners took to the streets of New York flowing to the Park.  Functioning in ways similar to our own circulatory system the Park serves as the heart of the NYC running community.  On Sunday morning this was evident as streets of runners veined their way to the park.  They gathered, ran, and rejuvenated their runner’s spirit before heading back out onto the NYC streets.  Those in town for the marathon will always feel a twinge of irritation with how things played out but marathon runners persevere.  It’s what makes a marathon runner different from others.  Sometimes they just need to heal their running spirit.  Sunday in Central Park this spirit was alive and well.  I just hope that those victims of Hurricane Sandy can find their own refuge.
